Concept and Inspiration:
The work draws inspiration from the poetic line “As blossoms exude fragrance, bees gather nectar, yet for whom do they labor?” In Chinese, the character “馨(xin)” denotes a fragrance that spreads far and wide; by extension, it can also describe refined moral character and noble virtue. When used as a verb, it suggests the cultivation or manifestation of noble moral character. The image of the bee symbolizes diligence, courage, and a positive, forward-looking spirit. Through an innovative use of color, the artist depicts scenes from the natural world, employing bold, paper-cut–like contrasts to render a micro-ecological environment. The composition expresses a deep appreciation for beauty and an aspirational vision of life.
Technique:
The work employs the yang carving and cutting technique (positive engraving method), combined with extensive fine-line linking techniques. Flowers and leaves are connected through continuous single-line structures that remain orderly, unbroken, and fluid, achieving a natural and lively rhythm. Meticulous craftsmanship is evident in the smallest details from the delicate texture of the bees’ bodies to the dynamic rendering of their wings, bringing the imagery vividly to life.
